EAC as Miami-Dade Expressway Authority’s (MDX) General Engineering Consultant, successfully provided support to MDX with development of the Project Development & Environment (PD&E) Study, development of the Design-Build Procurement Package, development of the Construction Engineering and Inspection (CE&I) Procurement Package, Design Management, and Construction Management.

The project included the development of the first Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) built in South Florida, and the first in an urban environment. The new DDI provided improved safety and traffic efficiency.

The project also incorporated designated bus only lanes on the shoulder connecting Dolphin Park and Ride Transit Station and downtown Miami. As part of the incorporation of “bus on shoulders” an experimental permit was obtained from FHWA for red striping and “Bus Only” designations on the hardened shoulder.

This project required the incorporation of innovation in its procurement methods, intersection design, the inclusion of transit, public outreach, and accelerated Right-of-Way (ROW) acquisition, all of which resulted in cost-effective and timely project delivery. The project received the ACEC FL 2021 Engineering Excellence Grand Award for Special Projects.
